Karate Sylabus at Broomhill Sports Club. The BSC karate club is part of the Tei Karate Association which is affiliated to national and international governing bodies through the Shorai Martial Arts Association. This is based on a traditional Shotokan background with lots of cross training thrown in. Thus our katas are all from the Shotokan style but we also look at close range and grappling techniques. Students learn the basic moves of kicking and punching and what stances to use. They then go on to learn combinations of these moves, both by themselves and with a partner. As mentioned we also learn the Shotokan katas. For a video of what kata looks like, just click here. We also look at sport karate which is a very specialised form of fighting that allows competitions to take place safely. The final aspect of the curriculum is self defence where we look at the techniques that are too dangerous for sport karate and how they can be used. This includes ground work and grappling. A typical session might be as follows Warm up: stretching, games exercises Basics: Practising basic techniques or combinations Pad Work: Trying these techniques out against a pad Break Kata: learning or perfecting the kata for the next grading Sport Karate or self defence, working with a partner Cool down
