Karate Competitions at Broomhill Sports Club. We enter local and national tournaments. The older students can even enter international tournaments! At each competition there are usually two categories of competition. The first is called Kumite or sparring. This is lightning fast and consists of two fighters, trying to be the first to score a point against the other. No great strength is required here, just super fast reflexes and great techniques. Each fighter will be trying to out think their opponent as they use a combination of movement, punches, kicks and blocks to try and win. Competitors wear pads on their hands and legs to reduce the chances of injury and all blows are pulled so that no contact is made. Each fight will last about 2 minutes and there is a referee on the mat with the competitors to regulate the match and ensure the safety of both fighters The 2nd type of competition is kata. This involves performing set routines of punches, kicks and blocks. Its just you, up alone, trying to do the best you can. A video of two world class athletes performing kata is shown at the bottom. Competitions are great fun and a great way to make new friends. There are always lots of medals, trophies and certificates to be won. Students need to be licensed to enter any competition.
